Saipan Tribune, Tuesday, January 16, 2007
"Yesterday's Martin Luther King Jr. Day became a “Day On” instead of a “Day Off” for some CNMI community members.
Businessman Willie Brundidge, a member of the African-American Cultural Preservation Committee, led a number of volunteers in a beach cleanup along the Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan yesterday from 9am to 1pm.
Brundidge collaborated with Beautify CNMI! officers for the cleanup and a total of 20 volunteers helped.
Brundidge, owner of Mozell's Boys Ground Maintenance and Trash Clean Up, said he is commemorating Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday as a “day on,” and not a “day off.”
He told Saipan Tribune yesterday that he has been living in the CNMI the past 14 years and the community has helped him immensely. Yesterday's cleanup was just a small way for him to give something back to the community, he said.
“I'm an African-American business owner and I want to show some gratitude to the spirit of brotherhood that was extended to me. It's the type of thing that Martin had in his dream for us-it's something to exemplify the spirit of unity, brotherhood, making a difference and doing something positive in the interests of others' welfare,” he said."
Beautify CNMI! is a coalition of concerned citizens, private groups, and government entities united to enhance the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands' natural beauty and foster community pride in its residents and visitors.
