3rd Wing Beach cleanup yields less trash
Some 27 volunteers joined MINA's third Wing Beach cleanup on Sept. 16, clearing away brush and weeds from the parking area, around the environmental information signs, and hauling away 260 lbs of trash.
The good news is that the total was 40 lbs less than the cleanup last month, bringing the grand total to 890 lbs of land-based litter being removed from the group's adopted beach. The bad news is that two car batteries and two quarts of used oil were found along the access road.
On a positive note, MINA volunteers were able to identify and report the source of dumped objects to the Coastal Resources Management Office. CRMO responded quickly and requested that the responsible party take corrective actions, one being to send representatives to assist with the next MINA cleanup.
"We hope to see them there on Oct. 21, 8am so we can recognize them for being responsible business owners and addressing the problem," said MINA secretary Kathy Yuknavage.
The group extended its thanks to Saipan Southern High School, the Church of Latter Day Saints, Perry Tenorio from the Marianas Visitors Authority, and bush whackers Jesus C. Borja and Brad Doerr.
"This was our largest turn out thus far. MINA cleans up Wing Beach the 3rd Saturday of every month. Come make a difference," Yuknavage added. (PR)
