How are those Flame Trees doing?
Remember the 22 Flame Trees that we planted back in June? You know, the ones that helped kick off the Restoration Committee activities? Well, some of them are doing really well, while others, well, let's just say that they need to be replaced. We replaced three of them during the recent Tree Care Workshop coordinated by Marianas Resource Conservation & Development Council. There are others that need to be replaced. When the rainy season gets closer, we are going to plant even more.
P.S. The tree in this picture was waist high when we planted it six months ago.

Beautify CNMI's Spirit- Contagious!
"Never Doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world; Indeed, its the only thing that ever has" -Margaret Mead.
On Sunday morning, Beautify CNMI and over 100 volunteers rallied together to help clean up the Garapan Tourist District. This was indeed the largest turn out for 2007! My name is Beverly Cabanatan and I am the Women's Ministry team leader for the Saipan Seventh-day Adventist Church. This was my third cleanup with Team BC. The reason that I keep coming back and the reason why I have gotten my church involved is simply because your spirit is contagious! Team BC exhibits unity and extraordinary love for Saipan. It is a powerful feeling to be a part of a community working together for the greater good. I would like to express to Team BC and the community of Saipan that the Saipan SDA Church and School is excited about being involved with Beautify CNMI's projects.
The groups that were represented were: Marianas RC&D, MINA, Kinpachi Restaurant, MOVER, CNMI Power, Saipan International School (SIS), Garapan Elementary School, SDA Church (Women's Ministry and SDA Pathfinders Club) and School, ISA CNMI, Rep. Cinta Kaipat, Staff, and Family, Rep. Absalon Waki, Jr., and Steve Hiney Consulting.
I hope that's everyone. Let me know if I have forgotten anyone.
Holy Cow!
Thank you to the over 100 volunteers who helped us clean up Garapan this morning. This morning's cleanup was the largest cleanup of 2007 (so far).Update: we picked up 1260 lbs of trash. Wow, that's a lot of candy wrappers!

Mount Tapachou Cleanup
We had our first cleanup of Mount Tapachou this morning! 29 volunteers helped us removed 460 lbs of trash. Most of the trash was on the side of the mountain, just below the lookout. For years people have been throwing paper cranes and beer cans over the side. There were so many beer cans on the side of the mountain that the volunteers couldn't take a SINGLE step without hearing the loud crunch of an aluminum can. Some of participants this week were MINA, Marianas RC&D, MOVER, Tasi Tours, Mike Tripp Productions, Visitors Channel, Rep. Cinta Kaipat & Family, Church of Latter Day Saints, and Mr. Abe Malae.

The Virus is Spreading
From Ruth Tighe: On My Mind:
Let's also hope that the omission of any mention of Beautify CNMI! in the announcement of the Division of Environmental Quality's beautiful village contest was an oversight. Particularly since it also is tied to Beautify CNMI!'s re-cycling goal of providing curb pick-up to the entire island, surely this fits right into the Beautify CNMI! campaign, and should be conducted in coordination with other BC members?
And speaking of beautifying the CNMI, I came across two groups doing clean up on their own just this past week: a group from the Japanese organization ISA CNMI doing a meticulous clean-up along the Micro Beach shoreline - they were even picking up the numerous cigarette butts! - and a private group cleaning one of the roads in Tanapag Village. It's catching!!!!

DEQ Cleanup Brigade at COP
The Division of Environmental Quality cleanup brigade will be at it again, picking up trash at Coral Ocean Point.
If you would like to volunteer your time to cleanup and beautify our island, meet the DEQ representative in the bright green T-shirt on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007 at 8am.
The cleanup will head south toward Aquarius Beach Tower and beyond.
The brigade cleans until 10am and breaks for drinks, then continues, if needed. This month, outstanding brigade volunteers who participated in at least 10 monthly cleanups will receive a brigade cap and those who participated in at least three cleanups will receive a green brigade t-shirt.
For more information about volunteering, contact the DEQ office at 664-8500. (PR)
